Virender Sehwag, famously known for his destructive batting approach on the field, once again takes a destructive route but this time with words.
Sehwag, who started his career under Sourav Ganguly and since then he always rated as Ganguly as the best captain India has ever had. However, if one go with stats, then it is Virat Kohli, who has the best winning percentage among all Indian test team captains.
But the former Indian opener believes it was Ganguly who build the team and not Kohli.
“Sourav Ganguly built a new team, brought in new players, and backed them through their highs and lows… I doubt if Kohli did that in his tenure,” said Sehwag in Sport’s 18 show Home of Heroes.”
“In my opinion, the No 1 captain is the one who builds a team and gives confidence to his players. He (Kohli) backed some players, some he did not,” said Sehwag.
The current president of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly has led India in 49 games with a win percentage of 42.85. Under his captaincy, team India witnessed 21 wins, 15 draws and 13 defeats.
Virat Kohli, on the other hand, has the best track record as an Indian captain. Team India registered 40 wins out of 68 games under his leadership of Kohli with a win percentage of 58.82
In the Ganguly era, we have had seen him backing the youngsters like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Ashish Nehra, Zaheer Khan, and Virender Sehwag, who all later turned out to be superstars for the Indian cricket. Similarly, Kohli backed Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav, who labelled as the best pace attack in the world.
Both Ganguly and Kohli played a huge role in shaping Indian cricket, so it is not appropriate to do the comparison between who is the best captain, as both did their job quite well and took the Indian team to greater heights during their captaincy tenures.
