VEL vs SPN Match Summary:
Velocity defeated Supernovas by 7 wickets in the 2nd match of the Women’s T20 Challenge at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday.
Chasing the target of 151, Velocity lost their first wicket early when Natthakan Chantham tried a drive against Pooja Vastrakar and edged the ball and got caught in the slip.
India’s International star Shefali Varma then took the charge and started thrashing Supernovas bowlers. She did a great partnership with Yastika Bhatia for the second wicket to put Velocity back in the run-chase. Both added 63 runs in 35 balls before Yastika Deandra Dottin trapped her in the 8th over of the innings.
Dottin continued the momentum and again gave Supernovas a breakthrough by removing the dangerous Shefali Varma 51 (33). But both the new batters, the skipper of Velocity Deepti Sharma (24* off 25) and South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt (51*off 35) kept on scoring runs with healthy strike rates to help their team win the game against two-time WTC champions Supernovas.
Earlier, Supernovas witnessed a dreary start when they lost 3 early wickets in span of just 18 runs. The trio of Priya Punia, Deandra Dottin and Harleen Deol, who provided Supernovas a blistering start the other night, got out cheaply in this game.
However, the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and the wicket-keeper Taniya Bhatia steadied their ship and did a valuable 82 runs partnership to put Supernovas back on track. When everything was looking good for Supernovas they suddenly faced a blow when Taniya Bhatia got run-out in the 15th over.
Harmanpreet Kaur from the other end continued her destructive approach and helped her team reach 150 mark by playing an effective knock of 71 runs in just 51 deliveries at a strike rate of 139.22.
For Velocity, Kate Cross bagged 2 wickets, while Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav took 1 wicket each.
