In especially on the One-Day International format, the young batter has had a season with the bat that is her best ever. With one century and eight half-centuries for South Africa, Wolvaardt scored 882 runs in 18 games at an average of 49.00.
A standout performance from the Cape Town-born cricketer during the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 in New Zealand in March, where she scored 443 runs—the most any South African player has ever scored at a World Cup—helped the Proteas advance to the semifinals, capped off her outstanding year.
Wolvaardt’s participation in Team South Africa’s participation in the inaugural Women’s T20 competition at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham is another noteworthy accomplishment. When South Africa played England in a one-off match in Taunton, England, the top-order batter also made her eagerly anticipated Test cricket debut.
The Sport Industry Awards are one of South Africa’s most prestigious sporting and business awards ceremonies, honouring leaders and industry influencers.
Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 in South Africa
The eighth ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will begin on February 10, 2023, in South Africa, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC)
The competition begins at Paarl with the host South Africa playing Sri Lanka in Group 1. Other cities that will host matches include Cape Town and Gqeberha.
The defending champion Australia will begin its campaign on February 11 against New Zealand after being placed in Group 1. On February 12, the event will also feature a Group 2 match between India and Pakistan.
Top two teams from both groups will make it to the semifinals, to be played on February 23 and 24 in Cape Town. The final will take place on February 27 at the same venue.
The 23-year-old, who will be playing her World Cup in her country has expressed her excitement for the same and termed it as a ‘‘once-in-a-career’ opportunity.
Laura, the standout Proteas batter, is excited to play for South Africa in a T20 World Cup at home for the first time. “I am excited at the thought of the Women’s T20 World Cup being only 100 days away. Hosting a World Cup at home is special, it is something that might only happen once in my career. It will be the first time we will be playing in a World Cup with some home support, that is something I am looking forward to.”
In addition to preparing to host the, the Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time, South Africa is also preparing to host the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in Potchefstroom and Benoni in January 2023
