Shane Burger set to step down as Scotland Head Coach

Scotland Head Coach Shane Burger leaves Scotland for Somerset Head Coach role 

Scotland Head Coach Shane Burger, Coach of the Scotland Men’s team, will leave his position at the end of February to take up a new position at Somerset County CC as an assistant coach and lead batting coach. After leading KwaZulu-Natal Inland to three titles over a fruitful three-year span from 2015 to 2017. Shane joined Cricket Scotland in March 2019.

The 40-year-old Burger replaced Grant Bradbury as head of the Scottish organization in 2019. From then on he oversaw one of Scotland’s greatest triumphs in history. 

When they defeated Bangladesh in the group round of the 2021 T20 World Cup. After which they advanced to the Super 12s round.

Additionally, they defeated West Indies at the T20 World Cup last year. They were in first place in the ICC’s World Cup League 2. With the top three sides moving on to this summer’s qualifier for the 50-over competition in India.

Who is Shane Burger?

Shane Burger, a former cricketer from South Africa who played first-class cricket for KwaZulu-Natal Inland, was born on August 31, 1982. After his playing career, he came in as head coach of KwaZulu-Natal Inland and won many titles at the local level. 

Later in 2019, he took over as Scotland’s Head Coach and there also he made history on several occasions. Now he has decided to leave Scotland’s role and take over as  “Somerset County CC” as an assistant coach and lead batting coach

Comments of Scotland Interim Head of Performance

Toby Bailey, Interim Head of Performance Scotland said “We would like to thank Shane for the hard work. He has put in with the team during the last four years. He has continued the development of the men’s national team and it is clear that beating Full-Member nations is no longer a shock. We wish him all the best for the future and I am sure he will excel at Somerset and beyond.”

He concluded by saying, “The team has moved onto new levels under his tenure. And he leaves the team in a great position going into an exciting season with two ICC World Cup qualifications to play for. Our search for a new head coach is already underway. We hope to make an appointment in good time for the summer fixtures.”

Shane Burger’s Comments 

He was quite emotional. And started out by saying “I have been fortunate to have coached the Scotland men’s national team for the past four years. The journey has been a rewarding one both on and off the field. This group and to have played a role in that journey is something I am incredibly proud of.”

“There have been many challenges thrown along the way. But we have managed to navigate our way through these and achieve some fantastic results.” said Shane Burger. “I am excited to be moving onto to a new adventure with Somerset. Where I will be taking on a different role and have no doubt it will keep developing me as a coach and person.” (Source – ESPNcricinfo)
