Shafali Verma sets new record, becomes youngest to reach 1000 T20I runs

Shafali Verma New Record

Shafali Verma returned to form after a stretch of mediocre play with a magnificent half-century on Saturday in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 encounter between India and Bangladesh at the Sylhet Cricket Ground.

Before the continental tournament, Shafali Verma had been having a difficult time, but that is no longer the case as she played a mature knock of 46 runs off 39 balls against Malaysia and another mature knock of 55 runs off 44 balls in her very next game against Bangladesh women.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first. She looked at her fluid best. The Indian batsman struck 55 runs in just 44 balls, contributing to a 96-run partnership for the first wicket with Mandhana.

She achieved a significant milestone by accumulating 1,000 runs in T20I cricket as a result of her outstanding effort. As the youngest player in women’s cricket to accomplish the feat, the 18-year-old set a new record.

She actually accomplished the feat faster than teammate Jemimah Rodrigues‘ previous record. Last year, at the age of 21 years and 32 days, Jemimah reached the landmark. Shafali, in contrast, has recently reached the milestone after taken 18 years and 253 days doing so.

Shafali is also the fastest woman who reached the milestone the quickest after making her T20I debut (3 years, 14 days). To reach the milestone, she broke Meg Lanning’s long-standing record of 3 years, 87 days set by Australia’s full-time skipper. With 735 balls faced, she completed 1000 T20I runs at the fastest pace ever.

Who is the fastest-ever Indian Woman to reach 1000 runs?

Mithali Raj, who reached the milestone in 40 innings, is the fastest-ever Indian woman to reach 1000 runs.

Talking about the match, the Women in Blue posted 159 on board in their 20-over quota. Jemimah Rodrigues gave the team a strong finish with an undefeated knock of 35 in 24 balls after Shafali and Smriti left.

In reply, Bangladesh started the run-chase campaign on a decent note and added 45 for no loss in 9 overs. Sneh Rana then provided India the first breakthrough and after that, Indian bowlers started to dominate the game.

They kept the things tight throughout and didn’t let the neighbours’ score much runs. The all-rounder Deepti Sharma and Shafali Verma bagged 2-2 wickets in the process. While Sneh Rana and Renuka Singh took 1-1 wicket each.

India currently sitting at top of the points table with 4 wins in 5 games with a net run-rate of +2.590. Pakistan at second with 6 points and a net run-rate of +1.684. While Sri Lanka is on third spot.

The Women in blue will next play against Thailand in the 19th match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
