Happy Birthday Garry Sobers! The Cricketer Who Did it All and With Excellence

Being a decent cricket player is one thing; becoming a great one is very difficult; being a timeless figure is even more difficult; nonetheless, Garry Sobers was one of the greats, the pantheon to which all aspiring players aspire. He celebrates his 86th birthday today and there is no better occasion to celebrate the legend.

Sir Garfield ‘Garry’ Sobers was not only the greatest all-rounder ever or someone who could do everything on the cricket field except umpire, but also an accomplished sportsman outside of cricket. He was a stylish but powerful batsman, a bowler with a repertoire ranging from beguiling spin — two kinds — to sheer pace, and a lithe, impassable fielder in any position.

Between 1954 and 1974, Sobers played 93 tests for the Windies, compiling 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 with 26 centuries (highest score: 365 not out), 235 wickets at an average of 34.03, including six hauls of five or more (best: 6/73), and 109 catches/stumpings.

It was challenging to match or surpass the numerous test records he set, including the greatest individual score, the most runs scored, the first-ever six sixes in an over in first-class cricket, and others. His record of 365 not out remained for 36 years before being broken by fellow West Indian Brian Lara. It is still the fifth-highest individual score, and only three men (Lara twice) have higher scores.

Statistics may not accurately reflect Sobers’ easy grace, which he brought to his performance in every aspect of the game. He led the West Indies to some key victories from 1964 to 1972 which started the process that would turn the team into world champions.

They claim that his legacy in the sport will serve as a good indicator of his genuine success. What could be more advantageous than having a permanent signature next to their name? The esteemed Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for cricketer of the year was established in recognition of talent that West Indies cricket can be proud of producing and that the rest of cricket must continue to be in utter awe of.

The older generation has witnessed it and the younger generations have heard it from their parents, the legacy of Sir Garfield Sobers who turns 86 today. Many claim that there will be no ruthless champion team like West Indies from the 60s-70s cause there will be Gary Sobers playing in the team. Here’s wishing the legend Happy Birthday Garry Sobers!
