Happy Birthday, Lahiru Thirimanne: Hettige Don Rumesh Lahiru Thirimanne, who is popularly known as Lahiru Thirimanne. Lahiru is a Sri Lankan international cricketer, and also the former ODI captain of Sri Lanka. He is a top-order batsman and a right arm medium fast bowler.
Today Lahiru Thirimanne is celebrating his 33rd Birthday.
Lahiru Thirimanne is a top-order batsman who was born on 9th August 1989. Thirimanne started his cricketing career at S.Thomas College, Bandarawela, and started playing Under 11 under his first coach Sujeewa Gunarathne. After passing the grade 5 Scholarship exam Thirimanne joined Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, and played in the under 13, 15, 17, and under 19 teams.
Thirimanne made his debut in early 2010 in the One day International, and then he made his Test match debut against England at the Rose Bowl in June 2011, in the first test innings, he was dismissed for 10 runs by James Anderson.
Thirimanne scored his first ODI century against Australia at Adelaide Oval during the Commonwealth Bank Series 2012-13.
2014 Asia Cup was an epic tournament where he was sent to open the innings for the Lankan side due to the injury of Tillakaratne Dilshan, Thirimanne got the chance to excel where he scored two excellent Hundreds against Pakistan, he was also the highest run scorer for the Asia Cup 2014 helping Sri Lanka lift their fifth Asia Cup in their history.
In 2016 due to his inconsistent performance, he was dropped from the squad and struggled to get back into the squad, but he came to the squad in 2017 and was part of the test squad. He has been in splendid form in 2021 test cricket, where he played 13 innings in the test match format scoring 659 runs at an average of 50.69. It’s hard to predict whether he will come back to the ODI squad it is sure that he won’t return to the short format of the game where his record is disappointing.
He is considered the best batsman in the longest format of the game and he should continue to play in the tests as he plays well in that format of the game.
Lahiru Thirimanne recently announced on his Twitter account saying “Starting my academy is a dream come true. I have achieved a lot playing at the highest level and though it’s good time to give back to young cricketers what I experienced and the knowledge I got”.
