BCCI announces All-India Senior Men Selection Committee

New BCCI Selection Committee

Chetan Sharma was reappointed as the chairman of selectors by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Saturday. Four additional names were also revealed for the Senior Men’s National Selection Committee. Chetan Sharma has been suggested for the chief selector role.

India was also eliminated in the group stages of the T20 World Cup in 2021 as well during Chetan’s reign, and the squad also failed to get to the Asia Cup final. Following the Indian team’s failure to get to the T20 World Cup final last year, the board previously severed ties with the Chetan Sharma-led selection committee. BCCI’s Official Statement

The BCCI Secretary Jay Shah on Saturday evening announced the new BCCI selection Committee in a statement released on the official website. The statement said, “The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising Ms Sulakshana Naik, Mr Ashok Malhotra, and Mr Jatin Paranjape undertook an extensive process for selecting members of the All-India Senior Selection Committee.”

“The Board received around 600 applications following its advertisement for the five posts issued on its official website on 18th November 2022.”

Jay Shah further added by saying “Upon due deliberation and careful consideration, the CAC shortlisted 11 individuals for personal interviews. Based on the interviews, the Committee has recommended the following candidates for the Senior Men’s National Selection Committee. Chetan Sharma, Shiv Sundar Das, Subroto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, and Sridharan Sharath.”

They finished off by saying “The committee further recommended Mr Chetan Sharma for the role of Chairman of the senior men’s selection committee.” (Source – BCCI Website)

Selection Critries for the BCCI Selection Committee

Candidates “should have played a minimum of 7 Test matches or 30 First Class matches or 10 ODI and 20 First Class matches.” according to the BCCI’s criteria for the position.

The candidates “should have retired from the game at least 5 years ago.”  It has been reported that the BCCI will only provide a contract this time around for a year in order to prevent any disputes.

New Challenges ahead for Chetan Sharma

With India hosting the ODI World Cup in 2023, Chetan Sharma, a former bowler, is preparing for a second term as chief selector. India last won the title in 2011 and hasn’t added a world championship to their trophy case since 2013 other than the Champions trophy. So this time around it will be a Challenging task for Chetan Sharma and co to prepare a World winning squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
