Angelo Mathews Biography: Angelo Davis Mathews, popularly known as Angelo Mathews is a Sri Lankan cricketer who was born in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 2 June 1987. Angelo Mathews is a right-hand batter and also bowls right-arm medium. Mathews has been an integral part of the Sri Lankan squad for over a decade now and has also captained Sri Lanka for many years. Angelo Mathews is still a part of the Sri Lankan Test team. However, he has played any limited overs matches for almost a year now. Angelo Mathews was a member of the Sri Lankan squad in many ICC events. He also played an important role in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2014 and helped his team in winning their maiden T20 title.

Angelo Mathews started off playing cricket at the age of 7 years. Angelo Mathews attended St. Joseph’s College in Colombo and played for the cricket team of his college. Angelo Mathews started off as a bowler but eventually, he became an allrounder for his school as well as college team and won many matches for them single-handedly.

· Angelo Mathews Domestic Career

Angelo Mathews made his domestic debut back in 2005 when he was picked up in the Under-23 squad of Sri Lanka in a List-A match against New Zealand.

Angelo Mathews was appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka for the ICC Under-19 cricket world cup back in 2006. However, the tournament didn’t go well for him. Angelo Mathews made his first-class debut in 2006 for his domestic team Colombo.

Angelo Mathews has played 139 first-class matches in his career and scored 9858 runs including 23 centuries and 49 half centuries with the highest score of 270 runs in an innings. He has also taken 63 wickets with the best bowling figures of 5/47 in an innings.

Angelo Mathews has also played IPL for few seasons. In 2017, he was roped in by Delhi Daredevils for the season and then by the Pune Warriors in 2018.

Angelo Mathews was appointed as the captain of Kandy in the Super Four Provincial Tournament.

Angelo Mathews was also appointed as the captain of Kandy squad in the SLC T20 League back in 2018.

In 2022, Angelo Mathews was roped in by Colombo starts for the Lanka Premier league for the 3rd edition.

Angelo Mathews made his International debut back in November 2008 in an ODI match against Zimbabwe. However, it didn’t go down well for him.

In July 2009, Angelo Mathews made his Test debut in a match against Pakistan and scored 20 runs in the match. Angelo Mathews smashed his maiden half century in the 3rd match of his career.

Angelo Mathews scored his maiden century in 2011, two years after making his debut.

With a decent all-round record in his bag, Angelo Mathews was appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka test team and became youngest ever test captain for Sri Lanka. Angelo Mathews also led his team in the historical series win in England.

In 2013, Angelo Mathews was appointed as the captain of Sri Lanka for all the three formats of cricket.

In 2014, Angelo Mathews smashed his maiden ODI century in a match against India. However, Sri Lanka lost the match.

Angelo Mathews also led Sri Lanka in Asia Cup in 2014 and help them in winning the title. Within 2 years, Angelo Mathews became most successful captain in ODIs for Sri Lanka with 20 wins in just first 32 matches.

Angelo Mathews also made a record of smashing fastest half century in World Cup by a Sri Lankan batter. He led his team to the quarterfinals in the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

By 2015, Angelo Mathews reached a target of taking 100 ODI wickets and 3000 ODI runs.

In July 2017, Angelo Mathews led Sri Lanka team lost the ODI series against Zimbabwe and on the next day Angelo Mathews stepped down of the captaincy from all the formats of cricket.

Angelo Mathews was included in the squad of Sri Lanka for the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019. But the tournament didn’t go down well for him and was dropped from the team.

Angelo Mathews got into a controversy with the Sri Lanka Cricket board and also announced that he will be retiring from international cricket in 2021. However, Angelo Mathews is still the part of Sri Lanka test squad.
