In their final group match at the Commonwealth Games, South Africa thrashed Sri Lanka, winning a consolation match on Thursday (August 4). Sri Lanka was bowled out for just 46 in a match that, quite remarkably, only lasted 23.2 overs, which is their lowest-ever T20I total.

After losing their first two matches to England and New Zealand, South Africa was already out of contention for a semifinal position. However, they continued to come out swinging when Shabnim Ismail threw away Hasini Perera’s opening ball. Then, in the second over, Masabata Klaas struck, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 1/2. Then, as South Africa just kept attacking, Chamari Athapaththu observed the mayhem unfold at the opposite end.

There was no reprieve in store as every hitter was out for single-digit runs, with the exception of the captain. Athapaththu was the sixth batsman to be dismissed in the game’s first 10 overs, putting Sri Lanka in serious jeopardy of failing to complete their allotted 20 overs of batting. They folded for 46 in just 17.1 overs, proving the point.

Following that, the South African attackers Anneke Bosch and Tazmin Brits had no trouble pursuing the small target. While Brits scored three runs in her unbroken 21 while Bosch hit two, South Africa won the match in seven overs to snap an eight-game losing streak.

With a convincing victory in their final match of a lengthy England tour, South Africa snapped an eight-match losing streak, including five in the T20I format. At the Commonwealth Games, they placed third in Group B, hence they won’t compete in the medal matches. With losses in each of their three group games, Sri Lanka is now at the bottom of the standings. They still have a lot of work to do before they can qualify for the T20 World Cup next year, particularly in the area of batting.
