We Look At Bangladesh Strengths And Weaknesses For Asia Cup 2023

Bangladesh has been a side that has threatened top teams quite frequently these days. It is since the turn of the 2010 decade where they started finding their feet at the international level. Bangladesh had upset wins over Australia (2005), India (2007), and South Africa (2007) but they started being consistent only recently.

Their impressive recent past:

They have been top notch at home beating sides like India (twice) and Pakistan. Bangladesh made it to the quarterfinals of the 2015 ODI World Cup in Australia. They had a fairly decent 2019 ODI World Cup too with a semifinal appearance in 2017 Champions Trophy.

A tough group to come out of:

Bangladesh is placed in Group B. It is an exact encore of the group that they were part of last year. Bangladesh failed to get past the first round in the 2022 edition albeit in the T20 format. The shortest format of the game hasn’t exactly been their biggest strength. But they will be wary of the threat that two games against tricky opponents can knock them out of the tournament.

# Bangladesh Strengths:

They are a side that knows how to go about their game in the ODI format. Bangladesh has seasoned professionals who have time and again delivered for their side. Shakib Al Hasan continues to be the world’s premier allrounder. Mushfiqur Rahim brings in loads of experience to the set up. Mustafizur Rahman will lead the pace attack with his clever variations. Mehidy Hasan Miraz will be the lynchpin who will be expected to play a major role in the tournament.

# Bangladesh Weakness:

The injury to Ebadot Hossain has come at an inopportune time for Bangladesh. He was really coming into his own as the pace spearhead. His back of length bowling wasn’t the easiest to face for most batters. The absence of Tamim Iqbal also robs them of his experience at the top of the order. Bangladesh is mainly dependent on their senior pros to deliver. It might prove to be their undoing in a multination tournament like this.

# Opportunity:

They have twice finished as the finalists in the tournament. But unfortunately haven’t touched the finish line. Both their losses in the finals were close affairs. It is herein where Bangladesh has perennially struggled. They would want to go all the way this time around in Asia Cup 2023.

# Threat:

The instability owing to Tamim Iqbal’s retirement and subsequent withdrawal might end up having a say in this tournament. Litton Das would have fancied his chances to captain the side but Shakib will do the job for now. The fans will hope that the power games don’t affect the team’s harmony in such a big tournament.

# Expectation:

In a closely tied group it is difficult to predict any outcome. Bangladesh if they play to their potential have it in them to reach till the finals yet again. It will take something special for them to lift the title!
