Mumbai Indians Women’s Strengths and Weaknesses for Womens Premier League 2025

MI women Strengths and Weaknesses for WPL 2025

As we head close to the Womens Premier League 2025 opener on 14th February, 2025, which is scheduled between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Giants, let’s take a moment and talk about WPL 2024 season’s second spot team Mumbai Indians. Here are the MI Women strengths and weaknesses for WPL 2025.

Strengths

Strong Overseas Mixture

Nadine de Klerk, a 25-year-old South African rising star, was signed to replace England’s Heather Knight in RCB’s squad last season, which ultimately won the WPL title. She played only one match, taking two wickets against Delhi Capitals. De Klerk was acquired by Mumbai in the WPL 2025 mini-auction at her base price, a potential bargain for her signature.

However, with the experienced Shabnim Ismail still performing strongly for the Mumbai franchise, de Klerk might not get an immediate spot in the Starting XI. Nevertheless, she is a valuable backup option and a reliable pressure bowler for South Africa, strengthening Mumbai’s already strong overseas lineup for WPL 2025.

Rising Star in the Squad

The 16-year-old Indian wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini, was signed by the franchise for a substantial 1.60 Crores, after a fierce bidding war with Delhi Capitals. Her standout domestic performances and significant role in India’s consecutive ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup title in Malaysia earned her recognition.

Kamalini was the second-highest run-scorer for India in the tournament and the third overall, scoring 143 runs at a strike rate of 104.37 and an average of 35.75 in seven innings. However, with Yastika Bhatia and Kamalini will have to fight for the opener spot on the team.

Weaknesses

Vastrakar’s Injury Issues

Pooja Vastrakar, has always played a key part in the squad, showcasing impressive batting and bowling skills. However, injuries have effected several key players ahead of the 2025 WPL edition. Vastrakar’s absence could be a significant blow to the franchise, as she provides both valuable pace-bowling and strong finishing abilities. Injuries to other players will also affect their performances in the upcoming season.

Underwhelming Local Middle-Order

While the starting XI seems to be complete, there are concerns regarding the Indian players in the squad, particularly in the middle-order. Mumbai’s overseas trio of Nat Sciver-Brunt, Melie Kerr, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur have been crucial in the batting lineup.

Apart from Harmanpreet, the most experienced Indian middle-order players are Amanjot Kaur and Sajeevan Sajana. Despite limited innings, Amanjot has showcased her all-round skills, scoring 81 runs at a strike rate of 119.11 in 11 innings, with a high score of 42.

If MI manages to pull apart the weaknesses or find a sweet spot, where they gain benefits through them, MI can pull of a title charge for the upcoming WPL 2025.
