Hobart Hurricanes made a solid start to their Women’s Big Bash League 2024-25 campaign after beating Sydney Thunders by 31 runs on Monday. Let’s look at ST-W vs HH-W Highlights.

Defending a target of 142, the Hurricanes bowlers did not allow the Thunders batters to settle at the crease with their nearly perfect line and lengths. Heather Graham bagged the most wickets (3) for the Hurricanes while giving 19 in four overs.  

Skipper Phoebe Litchfield was the only batter from the Hurricanes team, who tried, as she scored 51, while the second best was 29 by Anika Learoyd. Apart from them none of the other batters touched the double-digit mark.

ST-W vs HH-W, Match 4 of Women’s Big Bash League 2024-25 

Invited to bat, the Hobart Hurricanes side faced a bit of a shaky start after losing their first wicket in the second over of the match.  

However, thanks to a 44-run second wicket stand between Wyatt-Hodge and Nicola Carey for the second wicket and 39 off 22 run partnership for the third wicket between Carey and captain Elyse Villani led the foundation for a big total.  

From 92 for 2 to 104 for 6, the Hurricanes once again suffered a challenging time while batting. With 2 overs left in the innings and Hobart’s score was 120, Tabatha Saville’s 16-ball 23* and Molly Strano crucial nine guided the team to a competitive total of 141 after 20 overs.  

Samantha Bates starred with the ball for Sydney Thunder, as she gave only 20 in four overs and bagged three wickets. Chamari Athapaththu also bowled a tight spell and gave 26 in four overs while claiming two wickets.  

Sydney Thunder to chase 142 in 20 overs  

The Thunders, in reply, witnessed a shocker after their veteran batter Chamari Athapaththu got out on the first ball of the run-chase.  

Chasing a target of 142 at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart, Phoebe Litchfield, who came into bat at number in the second ball of Thunder’s innings, played a knock of 37-ball 51 despite seeing falling from other end during the run-chase.  

Litchfield and Annika Learoyd provided the Thunders with a comeback in the match with their 52-run stand for the fifth wicket.  

Just when the things were looking in Thunder’s control, the departure of skipper Litchfield again shifted the momentum towards, and Hurricanes side and they did not lose the opportunity.  

Hobart lost their remaining five wickets while adding only 20 more runs, falling 31 runs short of the target.
