VVS Laxman, renowned for its stylish strokeplay and ability to deliver in tough situations, rounds out the top five. In 134 Tests between 1996 and 2012, he scored 8,781 runs at an average of 45.97. Laxman’s 17 centuries include memorable innings like the iconic 281 against Australia, highlighting his match-winning ability.   

  1. Virat Kohli – 9,230 runs

Virat Kohli, the modern-day great, has amassed 9,230 runs in 123 matches after making his debut in 2011. With a strong average of 46.85 and a highest score of 254*, Kohli’s aggression and flair have redefined India’s batting ethos. He has scored 30 centuries and 31 fifties and continues to be a key figure in Indian cricket. He took the retirement from the longest format, though.

Coming in third is Sunil Gavaskar, the original superstar of Indian batting. Playing from 1971 to 1987, Gavaskar scored 10,122 runs at an average of 51.12. Known for mastering hostile fast bowling in an era with limited protective gear, Gavaskar hit 34 centuries and 45 fifties, with the highest score of 236*. 

  1. Rahul Dravid – 13,265 runs

Rahul Dravid, famously known as “The Wall,” stands second with 13,265 runs in 163 matches from 1996 to 2012. With a solid average of 52.63, Dravid was known for his technique and composure under pressure. His 36 centuries and 63 fifties reflect his dependability, especially in challenging overseas conditions. Dravid faced a mammoth 31,184 balls, showcasing his unmatched patience. 

  1. Sachin Tendulkar – 15,921 runs  

Leading the list is Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar, the undisputed master of the game, who played an astounding 200 Test matches between 1989 and 2013. Scoring 15,921 runs at an average of 53.78, Tendulkar’s consistency and elegance made him a global icon. His 51 centuries and 68 half-centuries are unmatched, and his highest score of 248* remains a testament to his dominance. He also faced over 29,437 balls and struck more than 2058 fours, reflecting his remarkable endurance and stroke play.
