Pat Cummins Shares Positive Fitness Update Ahead of Ashes Return

Pat Cummins Provides Fitness Update on Back Injury

Australia captain Pat Cummins has shared an encouraging update on his recovery from a back injury, revealing his plans to return for the second Ashes Test against England at the Gabba, Brisbane, starting December 4. The pacer missed selection for the first Test in Perth as he continues to undergo rehabilitation for his long-standing back ailment. Pat Cummins confirmed he will travel with the team to Perth to intensify his training and assess his readiness for the Brisbane Test. So let’s know about Pat Cummins fitness update.

Cummins on His Recovery Progress

Speaking to Channel 7, Cummins said his recovery is progressing better than expected. “It’s been really good. I had a three-quarter run-up for seven or eight overs, and it’s all feeling good so I’m on track. Each session is getting more intense, and once I go over to Perth, it should be pretty close to a full run-up,” he said. The skipper emphasized that while he feels fit, he won’t rush his return given the demands of a five-Test Ashes series. “If I bowl 40 or 50 overs and have to back up a few days later, it might be too much. But the second Test is definitely a live option,” he added.

Australia’s Bowling Setup for the First Test

With Cummins ruled out of the Perth Test, Australia has named Scott Boland, Sean Abbott, and Brendan Doggett as pace options to support Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and spinner Nathan Lyon. Boland appears the front-runner among the backups, given his previous success in Australian conditions. Meanwhile, all-rounder Cameron Green remains under assessment to determine if he can resume bowling duties during the opening match.

Cummins Confident of a Strong Comeback

The Australian skipper remains optimistic about returning in peak form for the remainder of the Ashes. “There’s no stress so far. I’ve had this injury before, so I know what to expect. A few aches and creaks are normal after a layoff. I feel really good and confident about playing a big part in the summer,” Cummins stated.
