The Royal Challengers Bangalore has been one of the most consistent teams in the IPL in the last few years. Since the start of this decade, RCB is the only team to qualify for the playoffs every single time. They were knocked out in the eliminator in 2020 and 2021. RCB lost out to Rajasthan in the second qualifier in 2022. They are one of the initial three teams who are yet to win the IPL. RCB will be hoping to break the jinx in 2023.
We look at the RCB squad and analyze Royal Challengers Bangalore strengths and weaknesses:
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Strengths:
#1 A solid core
RCB’s improved showing in the last few years has got largely to do with a solid core at the helm. The side managed to retain almost its entire setup in the mega auction. RCB went the extra mile to retain players at a higher price in the mega auction. The settled look to the side helps the players know their roles clearly. RCB might not hold the star power they did earlier but they are more of a team now than they have ever been.
#2 Top quality overseas options
RCB has a fantastic overseas bunch who have played a key role in their consistent success. The likes of Faf du Plessis, Maxwell, Hasaranga, and Hazlewood have formed a potent core. These 4 have been indispensable for RCB. They have exciting alternate options in addition to the key players. RCB will continue to bank on them this season too.
#3 A strong bowling lineup
RCB has one of the most formidable bowling attacks in the tournament. Indian seamers Siraj and Harshal Patel have been the backbone of RCB’s bowling. Josh Hazlewood has been a wonderful addition to the lineup. Wanindu Hasaranga was arguably the bowler of the tournament last time around. The acquisition of Reece Topley adds a lot of muscle to their bowling department.
#4 Talented domestic talent
Rajat Patidar was a revelation last season. He became the first uncapped batsman to score a century in the playoffs. Patidar is knocking on the doors of national selection. He will be high on confidence in IPL 2023. Shahbaz Ahmed has represented the national team he too will be a better player this time around. If either Mahipal Lomror or Suyash Prabhudessai comes to the party then RCB will be unstoppable

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) Weakness:
#1 RCB Ageing stars
Faf, Kohli, and Maxwell are the cornerstone of RCB’s top order. All three batters are on the other side of the 30s. Add to the mix Dinesh Karthik who is most likely playing his last season of sorts. RCB’s over-dependence on its aging stars is a matter of concern. The age factor might haunt RCB sooner or later in the season.
#2 RCB’s Indian spin options
RCB released Yuzvendra Chahal ahead of the mega auction in 2022. They bought Hasaranga for a huge price. Hasaranga though repaid the faith handsomely. But during different stages of the competition, RCB did miss a quality Indian spinner who could partner with Hasaranga. Shahbaz did fill in decently but he was no Chahal.
#3 The middle order
Kohli and Maxwell played well within themselves in IPL 2022 owing to the inexperienced middle order. RCB has continued to show faith in a few uncapped Indian talents. It’s time their investments paid off handsomely.
