CSK ready for fifth IPL title
Having won the championship four times, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is known as one of the heavyweights in the Indian Premier League (IPL). As the 2023 season approaches, CSK will be hoping to reclaim the top spot after finishing ninth in the previous edition’s ten-team points table.
Following the conclusion of the last auction, CSK began to put in the work necessary to get ready for what may be MS Dhoni’s final season as a part of the team. Even while the new season won’t start for another two months, some players, like Dhoni, who are no longer participating in any other formats, will still need to work harder to match the intensity of others.
Dhoni in IPL
MS Dhoni has played in 234 IPL games thus far, totalling 4978 runs at an average of 39.2. Dhoni, one of the most dangerous batters, has frequently assisted his team in winning games and has kept fans delighted with his six-hitting prowess. He has struck 229 sixes in his IPL career to date.
At the outset of the IPL 2022, Dhoni, who had led CSK from the competition’s inception in 2008, stepped down as captain and handed the reins to Ravindra Jadeja.
However, the strategy faltered, as after a string of defeats Dhoni was once again given the captaincy while Jadeja withdrew from the competition owing to a rib injury.
Ben Stokes to be the next CSK captain?
There is no official announcement on this matter as of yet, Ben Stokes, the England Test captain and star all-rounder, who CSK acquired for a staggering 16.25 crore at the mini-auction conducted in December 2022, most likely to take over as the team’s new captain once MS Dhoni retires.
Ajinkya Rahane and Kyle Jamieson are two more well-known players who CSK added in addition to Stokes. It wouldn’t be incorrect to classify Rahane’s signing as a steal deal given that he only cost ₹50 lakh while the Kiwi bowler cost ₹1 crore.
In the final few games of the season, Dhoni indicated that he wanted to end in front of the Chennai crowd. Dhoni and the supporters’ wish might well come true because the IPL will switch back to a home-and-away format.
When the new IPL season starts this year, the Super Kings, who have previously won the championship four times, will be vying for the trophy for a fifth time under MS Dhoni.
