The Chennai Super Kings had a season to forget last year. CSK couldn’t replicate the magic of 2021 when they went on to win their fourth title. The confusion surrounding captaincy left CSK on a sticky wicket last year. They finished ninth among ten teams who played last season.

CSK won just 4 games painting a sorry picture last season. They are a proud franchise that will be itching to bounce back strongly this season. It is speculated that MS Dhoni will be playing his last season this year. CSK will want to make it memorable for their talisman.

We analyze the Chennai Super Kings Strengths and weaknesses in IPL 2023:

# CSK Strengths:-

#1 The presence of allrounders:

CSK loves its all-round players. There are no two ways about it. It is what makes the side special for so many years. The presence of all-rounders adds a lot of depth to the Chennai team. CSK has two of the best all-rounders in world cricket at the moment. It will surely be a sight to watch Ravindra Jadeja and Ben Stokes play alongside each other. They also have the likes of Moeen Ali, Dwaine Pretorius, and Mitchell Santner to back these two quality players.

#2 CSK’s spin options:

The IPL 2023 will finally see games being played across all the home and away venues of each franchise. CSK become a different unit when they play at home. The slow low surfaces of Chennai suit their bowlers a great deal. CSK has a lot of depth in the spin department. Jadeja and Santner are two left-arm spinners who can hold and break open the game at the same time. Mahesh Theekshana has evolved into a wonderful T20 bowler who could bowl during any stage of the game. Moeen Ali can also chip in with his useful off-spin.

#3 MS Dhoni’s last dance:

The IPL 2023 is seen as MS Dhoni’s last hurrah in the league. He is easily the most loved cricketer in the tournament. Dhoni has a separate fanbase even among opponent franchises. If the talks of Dhoni playing his last IPL is true then expect his team to put in everything to make it memorable for their leader.

# Weakness:-

#1 An ageing core:

It has been CSK’s mantra over the years to field an experienced side. They prefer to play with international players despite them being on the other side of the 30s and 40s. CSK phased out Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina, and Kedar Jadhav in the last few years. But they still have the likes of Dhoni, Ali, and Ambati Rayudu who are almost at the fag end of their career. CSK can’t be over-reliant on its ageing core anymore.

#2 Quality middle order:

CSK’s strongest suit in batting was their solid middle order. Raina, Subramaniam Badrinath, and MS Dhoni were the pillars of the side in the early years. The likes of Faf du Plessis, Rayudu, Robin Uthappa, and Ali took over the mantle in recent years. But it was this area where CSK struggled specifically last year. They signed Ben Stokes for this reason primarily as he could make the number 3 spot his own. But on the testing tracks of Chennai how useful will his addition prove to be is a question that only time can answer!
