Hardik Pandya Set for Long-Awaited Return as He Prepares to Play for Baroda in SMAT

Hardik Pandya injury return boosts Baroda in SMAT 2025-26

India’s premier all-rounder Hardik Pandya is finally set to return to competitive cricket after a lengthy injury break. The BCCI’s Centre of Excellence has cleared him to participate in domestic cricket, paving the way for him to represent Baroda in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). So let’s have a look at Hardik Pandya injury return.

Pandya to Feature in Early December Fixtures

Pandya is expected to play Baroda’s matches against Punjab on December 2 and Gujarat on December 4. Depending on his physical response, he may also be available for a potential third outing. These matches will help evaluate how well he holds up after resuming match play.

Recovery After Asia Cup Injury

The all-rounder has been sidelined since sustaining a left quadriceps injury during the Asia Cup in September. The setback ruled him out of the series against Australia and the ODIs against South Africa.

Pandya joined the CoE on October 14, where he spent more than six weeks on a structured rehabilitation program led by the BCCI’s medical and sports science experts.

Successful Completion of Return-to-Play Protocol

During his rehab, Pandya gradually increased his workload and successfully completed the full Return-to-Play criteria by November 30. The clearance confirms he is fit for all cricketing duties—including bowling, which is a key component of his role.

Why a Domestic Return Instead of ODIs?

Initially, a direct return for the South Africa ODI series beginning November 30 was considered. However, after reviewing his recovery progress, the think tank opted for a more cautious approach.

A comeback through SMAT allows Hardik Pandya to regain rhythm and confidence in a lower-intensity environment before stepping into international cricket again—especially with the T20 World Cup approaching.

Selectors to Closely Monitor His Progress

Baroda’s SMAT fixtures will help assess Pandya’s ability to manage workloads, particularly bowling in back-to-back games. If he responds well, he may feature in the December 6 clash against Haryana.

National selector Pragyan Ojha has been assigned to track his performances and provide updates to the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, as they prepare the T20I squad for the South Africa series.

Crucial Boost Ahead of India’s South Africa T20Is

India’s T20I tour of South Africa begins on December 9 in Cuttack, with subsequent matches scheduled at Mullanpur and other venues. Pandya’s return through domestic cricket comes at a crucial time as the team begins its preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
