From IPL-2022, BCCI Plans To Expand 74 Matches, With Inclusion Of 2 New Teams

For next season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to add additional franchises to the Indian Premier League (IPL). From 2022, the T20 tournament will expand to ten teams, with a total of 74 matches scheduled. This was revealed at a recent BCCI headquarters internal meeting. Tender documents for the new teams have been invited by the board, and the procedure is anticipated to be finished by October. IPL likely to see 74-match format.

IPL 2022 Likely To See 74 Match Format Being Played After Addition Of Two New Teams

The BCCI is hoping to keep the competition relevant after 10 teams failed to do so last time when Kochi Tuskers and Pune Warriors were introduced. Furthermore, the additional 14 matches would bring in more than Rs 800 crore for the board, with the figure certain to grow further after the present media rights contract expires in 2023.

‘There Are Issues Around Overseas Player Availability’: BCCI

IPL likely to see 74-match format. From next year, the BCCI is expected to return to the often IPL format of 74 matches. When 10 teams were split into two groups in 2011, the move was criticized. All of the teams will play 14 league matches under such a system. Every club in Group A will face 4 other teams in their group in a home and away game.

The side will also face a home or away match against one of the other group’s teams, as well as a game against each of the other group’s four teams. If the existing format is maintained, even with the inclusion of two extra teams, a total of 94 matches will be played in a season, raising concerns that viewing may suffer the consequences of the excessive amount of cricket.

“We are not ready for 94 matches yet. Our broadcasters are not ready. There are issues around overseas player availability and finding a suitable window. We will consider a bigger window in future years,” a BCCI official said.
