Vaibhav Suryavanshi vice-captain Ranji Trophy 2025-26
In a historic decision, 14-year-old cricket prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed as the vice-captain of Bihar for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season. The Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) announced the squad on Sunday, with Sakibul Gani named captain. This remarkable promotion makes Suryavanshi the youngest vice-captain in Ranji Trophy history, adding yet another feather to his already extraordinary cricketing journey.
Bihar’s New Leadership Setup
Bihar will begin their Ranji Trophy campaign in the Plate Group, opening against Arunachal Pradesh from October 15 at the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium in Patna, followed by a clash against Manipur in Nadiad. The team aims for a strong comeback this season after being relegated to the Plate group last year.
Suryavanshi’s appointment as vice-captain reflects the team management’s confidence in his leadership skills despite his young age. His experience in domestic and franchise cricket, along with his consistent performances, made him an obvious choice for the role.
A Record-Breaking Journey So Far
Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his Ranji Trophy debut at just 12 years old during the 2023-24 season, becoming the youngest to play in the competition’s long history. Since then, he has continued to break records at every level of the game.
At 13, he became the youngest cricketer to earn an IPL contract, signing with Rajasthan Royals. His breakout moment came earlier this year when he smashed a 35-ball century against Gujarat Titans, making him the youngest centurion in T20 history and registering the second-fastest century in IPL history.
He has also represented the India U-19 team in bilateral series against England and Australia, where his aggressive batting style and composure under pressure have drawn praise from former cricketers and coaches alike.
The Road Ahead
Bihar’s first two matches will see Suryavanshi act as deputy to skipper Sakibul Gani, bringing youthful energy and tactical sharpness to the side. The Plate group this season includes Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Sikkim, and Mizoram, giving Bihar an opportunity to rebuild momentum and fight for promotion to the elite group next year.
Suryavanshi, however, might not feature in the entire Ranji season, as he is also in contention for selection in India’s Under-19 World Cup squad, scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia early next year.

His rise from Samastipur, Bihar, to becoming a vice-captain at the senior level showcases not only immense talent but also maturity beyond his years. With the Ranji season around the corner, all eyes will be on this teenage sensation as he continues his meteoric rise through Indian cricket.
