On This Day In 2004 Brian Lara Becomes First To Score 400 In A Test Innings

Captain Brian Lara Scored An Unbeaten 400 Off 582 Balls To Set His Side On Their Way To A Draw:

On the day, 16 years ago, the great cricketer Brian Lara from West Indies became the first and only batsman to score 400 runs in a single innings in Test cricket. Captain Lara struck an undefeated 400 off 582 balls with West Indies looking at a whitewash at home against England to set his team on their way to a draw in the fourth Antigua Test.

Lara’s previous record of highest test score was smashed by Australia’s Matthew Hayden, who scored 380 against Zimbabwe in Perth only six months before that match. Lara himself came to the match in bad condition, scoring just 100 runs before that in the series with the best 36 results.

After the first day, Lara scored 86, and at the end of the second, he was on 313. The latest task for Steve Harmison trapped behind him worked, a run-out infringement as he was on 127, and another discovered behind Gareth Batty when he was on 373.

Brian Lara Batted For Just Under 13 Hours:

His strongest partnerships in the series were a 232-run stand for Ramnaresh Sarwan’s third wicket and the unbeaten 282-run partnership with Ridley Jacobs who struck himself for a century. It was on Day 3 when Lara hit 400 during Lunch.

Brian Lara scored 43 fours and 4 sixes in 582 balls and he played 13 hours. West Indies scored 751/5 and at last, England played in their two innings and scored the same. So that went to draw.

When Mahela Jayawardene, the player who is from Sri Lanka scored 374 runs in 2006 as apart as part of the world record 624-run stand he shared against South Africa with Kumar Sangakkara.
