What is Rohit Sharma’s ODI Future in Indian Cricket?

Rohit Sharma and BCCI to Discuss ODI Future

Rohit Sharma who is the current ODI format captain of the Indian cricket Team, is set to discuss his tenure and his role in the squad for the future of the team and his career as well. Let’s take a look at Rohit Sharma and BCCI to discuss ODI future.

Crucial Meeting Post-Asia Cup

Rohit Sharma, India’s ODI captain, faces a pivotal moment as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans discussions on his future after the Asia Cup 2025, ending September 28. According to Dainik Jagran, the BCCI aims to strategize for the 2027 ODI World Cup, with Rohit’s role under scrutiny.

Having retired from T20Is and Tests, the 38-year-old has not played an ODI since the Champions Trophy 2025. His next engagement is a three-match ODI series in Australia in October, but his prolonged break has sparked debates about his captaincy, especially as he’ll be over 40 by the 2027 World Cup.

Shreyas Iyer as Potential Successor

The BCCI reportedly favors Shreyas Iyer as Rohit’s successor for ODI captaincy, eyeing him for leadership until the 2027 World Cup. Unlike Shubman Gill, who captains Tests and is T20I vice-captain, Iyer’s experience leading Mumbai in domestic tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024, where he scored 325 runs, makes him a strong candidate.

A BCCI source clarified that Gill is being groomed for T20I leadership post-2026 World Cup, leaving Iyer as the frontrunner for ODIs. This transition plan reflects the BCCI’s focus on building a younger squad for the future.

Rohit’s Preparation and Speculation

Amid speculation, Rohit is training with former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar in Mumbai and may play in an unofficial India ‘A’ vs. Australia ‘A’ ODI series in September-October.

Reports suggest the BCCI might push Rohit and Virat Kohli to retire post-Australia tour unless they participate in domestic events like the Vijay Hazare Trophy to stay match-fit. These talks will shape India’s ODI strategy, balancing veteran experience with emerging talent.
