WTC 2025 Final Scenario for India After 4th BGT Test
In the context of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, India found itself in a promising position before the New Zealand test series, which was pivotal for their chances of qualifying for the WTC final. We look at WTC 2025 Final Scenario for India.
Unfortunately, India’s performance in that series was disappointing, as they lost all three matches. This defeat, however, did not eliminate India from contention. Their fate hinged on delivering strong performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).
However, the complexities of the situation boosted when India suffered a significant setback by losing the Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). This defeat dropped them to third place in the WTC standings, which was problematic given the stakes.
After the MCG loss, South Africa emerged as the first finalist, having secured a crucial series victory against Pakistan. Consequently, the race for the second spot in the WTC final became intensely competitive, with Australia and Sri Lanka also competing for a chance alongside India.
SCG Win and Australia’s Performance Against Sri Lanka Are Key
The situation grew more precarious for India following a heavy defeat against Australia by 184 runs. This loss drastically diminished India’s hopes of qualifying for the WTC final. Before the MCG defeat, India boasted a percentage of points (PCT) at 55.89, but following the crushing loss, their PCT dropped to 52.77. To maintain any realistic chance of qualifying, India needed to win the upcoming fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). A victory at the SCG would improve their PCT slightly to 55.26, keeping their hopes alive.
However, simply winning the match at Sydney would not be enough; India would also need to depend on the outcomes of Australia’s upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Should Australia falter and lose both matches in that series, India’s reduced chances for a spot in the WTC final could be revived. Thus, the fate of India’s qualification was not only reliant on their own performance but also hinged significantly on how Australia played against Sri Lanka in the critical Test series next month.
