Why PCB shifted 2nd test to Rawalpindi?

The Champions Trophy 2025 construction work has forced PCB to shift the second test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh to Rawalpindi, which was earlier scheduled for Karachi.

Bangladesh tour of Pakistan will start from August 21, and both teams will play two test matches in this series.

The national stadium in Karachi was the original host for the second test. The game was set to be played between August 30 to September 3. But due to ongoing renovation work Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi will now host both the games.

Construction experts has provided the update to PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) about the ongoing work at the stadium, and they informed the board that the noise pollution during the playing hours might disturb the cricketers, and the dust will also have an impact on the health of cricketers, as well as everyone present, such as officials, broadcasters and media.

Keeping all things in consideration, the PCB decided to shift the second test against Bangladesh to Rawalpindi. While Karachi will be hosting England in October, the board will closely work with the architects for a game as planned.

“Given that construction must continue uninterrupted to ensure the venue is operationally ready for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the PCB, after consulting all stakeholders and reviewing operational and logistical matters, has decided to hold both Tests in Rawalpindi.” – PCB said in a press release on Sunday.

Pakistan has got the rights of hosting an ICC event after 28 years. Pakistan last staged a tournament in 1996, when it hosted the ICC ODI World Cup.

While India’s travel plans to Pakistan for the marquee event is not confirmed, the board is hopeful to stage a successful tournament.

Champions Trophy 2025 will take place in February-March next year, and before that, Pakistan is set to play seven test matches and an ODI tri-series at home.
