Tamim Iqbal Withdraws from BPL 2026 After Requesting Removal from Players’ Auction

Tamim Iqbal Withdraws from BPL 2026

Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has officially withdrawn from the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2026, requesting the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to remove his name from the players’ auction scheduled for November 23. The 36-year-old confirmed the news on Sunday, November 16. So let’s have a look that Why Tamim Iqbal withdraws from BPL 2026.

Tamim Requests Board to Remove His Name

Tamim, who has been a part of every BPL edition since the tournament’s inception in 2012, informed BCB cricket operations manager Shahriar Nafees of his decision.

“Yes, I am not taking part in the BPL as I have requested Shahriar Nafees to remove my name from the players’ draft,”
Tamim told Cricbuzz.

His withdrawal marks a significant moment for both the league and Fortune Barishal, the franchise he helped guide to back-to-back titles.

A Pillar of BPL Since 2012

Across 11 seasons, Tamim has been one of the most successful and consistent performers in the BPL.
He played a crucial role for Fortune Barishal, excelling both as a leader and as a top-order batter during their consecutive title wins.

His absence will be a major change for the tournament landscape.

Multiple Factors Behind Tamim’s Decision

Tamim’s decision does not come as a shock, considering several key reasons:

1. Health Concerns

Tamim has been away from professional cricket since March 2024, after suffering a heart attack during a domestic match. Since then, his primary focus has been recovery rather than rushing back into competitive cricket.

2. Fortune Barishal Opting Out of BPL 2026

Fortune Barishal announced they would skip the 2026 BPL season, citing insufficient preparation time. This heavily influenced Tamim’s decision.

3. Interest in Cricket Administration

Tamim had shown interest in contesting the BCB elections, before withdrawing and alleging government interference in the electoral process. His administrative aspirations also played a part in stepping away from the tournament.

BPL 2026 Auction Returns After 12 Years

The BPL will hold a players’ auction on November 23, its first in 12 years.
Five franchises will participate:

  • Dhaka Capitals
  • Chattogram Royals
  • Rajshahi Warriors
  • Rangpur Riders
  • Sylhet Titans

The auction format was last used in 2012 and 2013, before the league shifted to a draft system for nine consecutive seasons.

Impact on BPL 2026

With Barishal skipping the tournament and Tamim withdrawing:

  • One of BPL’s biggest names will be absent.
  • Teams will look to rebuild in the reintroduced auction system.
  • BPL 2026 will begin a new phase without one of its longest-serving stars.
