New ICC Playing Conditions Announced Ahead of WTC Final 2025

What are the New ICC Playing Conditions from June?

The WTC Final is set to commence from 11th June 2025 at the Lords between South Africa and Australia, after which ICC is going to implement new playing conditions which beging from the next WTC cycle which is for 2025-27. Let’s take a look at ICC to start new playing conditions from June.

Single Ball Rule in ODIs

The International Cricket Council is set to implement a significant alternate change in One Day Internationals by going back to a single ball for the latter part of the innings, which is effective from July 2025. Currently, ODIs are using two new balls per innings. Under the revised PC’s or Playing Conditions, two new balls will be used for the first 34 overs. Before the 35th over, the bowling team will select one ball to be used for overs 35 to 50 at both ends, unless a replacement is needed.

For matches reduced to 25 overs or fewer before the first innings starts, each team will use only one new ball. If a ball requires replacement, it will match the condition of the ball being replaced, and the unused ball from overs 35–50 will be added for further replacement supply. This change aims to streamline gameplay and align with traditional ODI dynamics which will enhance the game.

Concussion Replacement Rule

The ICC has also changed its concussion replacement rules to enhance player safety. Teams must now submit a list of five concussion substitute players that include a wicketkeeper, batter, seam bowler, spinner, and an all-rounder to the match referee before the match begins. In exceptional cases where a concussion replacement player suffers a concussion, the match referee will allow a substitute outside the nominated five, following existing like-for-like protocols.

These updates ensure flexibility and clarity in managing concussion-related substitutions during the match, prioritizing player welfare while maintaining competitive fairness. Other updates such as what format the U19 Men’s World Cup will be played in, will be announced later after the discussion in ICC’s Annual Conference in Singapore from July 17 -20.
