The format? T20, the fast-paced, crowd-favorite version of the game. And here’s the twist — only six teams will battle it out for gold in both the men’s and women’s tournaments. That’s right, a very exclusive lineup will take the field, making the competition fierce and the stakes sky-high.
To accommodate the event, 90 player spots have been allocated per gender, allowing each squad to bring 15 players. But with over 100 countries playing T20 cricket, who gets to go?

While the USA is expected to receive a direct entry as the host nation, that leaves just five spots up for grabs through the qualification process. The official criteria are still to be announced, but you can bet the race to LA is going to be intense.
Cricket joins a lineup of five new sports confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for LA28. Alongside it are baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash — all part of an expanded Olympic vision that adds 22 medal events compared to Paris 2024. Despite the additions, the core athlete quota remains at 10,500, with 698 new slots reserved for the fresh sports.
The inclusion of cricket comes at a time when the game is finding its place in multi-sport events again. The 2022 Commonwealth Games featured women’s T20 for the first time — Australia took gold, India clinched silver. At the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, both Indian men’s and women’s teams brought home the gold.
India, in particular, will be a team to watch. With a World Cup-winning men’s T20 team and a rising women’s squad that’s turning heads internationally, expectations for podium finishes will be sky-high.
