Suzie Bates Ruled Out Till March With Serious Quad Injury

Veteran New Zealand batter Suzie Bates will remain out of action until March after suffering a quadriceps injury last month. The injury occurred while she was fielding during a Hallyburton Johnstone Shield match, and subsequent scans revealed a significant tear that requires an extended rehabilitation period of around three months. Injury rules Bates out of domestic season and Zimbabwe series

As a result of the setback, Bates will miss the remainder of Otago Sparks’ domestic home season, including the Super Smash. She has also been ruled out of the White Ferns’ upcoming home series against Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to begin in late February, according to the ICC website.

Despite the disappointment, the experienced campaigner remains focused on regaining full fitness in time for New Zealand’s tour of South Africa in March, where the White Ferns are set to play both T20I and ODI matches.

Bates determined to make comeback with White Ferns

Expressing her frustration at being sidelined, Bates admitted the injury was a tough blow but insisted her focus is firmly on returning to international cricket.

“I’m gutted to be missing out this summer. I was really looking forward to another season with the Sparks, especially the Super Smash. My goal now is to get back on the field with the White Ferns in March,” Bates said.

Recent World Cup struggles for New Zealand and Bates

The 38-year-old last featured for New Zealand during the Women’s ODI World Cup. She played in the White Ferns’ final league match against England, where she managed just 10 runs. Overall, Bates endured a difficult tournament, scoring only 40 runs across five innings at an average of eight and a strike rate of 61.53.

New Zealand finished sixth on the points table, registering just one win from seven matches and failing to qualify for the knockout stage. India went on to lift the trophy after winning the final.

A look at Suzie Bates’ illustrious career

Despite the recent challenges, Bates’ career numbers underline her importance to New Zealand cricket. She has featured in 178 ODIs, amassing 5,936 runs at an average of 38.79. In T20Is, she has scored 4,716 runs from 177 matches at an average of 29.11.

Bates has also contributed effectively with the ball, picking up 82 wickets in ODIs and 60 wickets in T20Is, cementing her reputation as one of New Zealand’s greatest all-round performers in women’s cricket.
