Sunil Gavaskar Approaches Delhi High Court to Protect His Personality Rights

In a significant move to safeguard his identity, former India captain and cricketing icon Sunil Gavaskar has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. With this step, Gavaskar has become the first Indian cricketer to seek formal legal protection against unauthorized use of his name, image, or likeness. So let’s know about Sunil Gavaskar personality rights protection.

Why Gavaskar Moved Court

India’s obsession with cricket often places players on a pedestal, but it also exposes them to misuse of their fame. From unauthorized endorsements to manipulated images, public figures frequently face exploitation of their personal identity.

To prevent such misuse, Gavaskar has filed a petition requesting the court to restrain individuals, brands, and organizations from using his photographs, voice, and persona without his consent.

His plea is scheduled to be heard on December 12 by Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora.

First Cricketer to Seek Personality Rights Protection

While celebrities from Bollywood have already taken legal routes to secure their personality rights, no Indian cricketer had previously approached the court for the same. Gavaskar now becomes the first in the cricketing fraternity to take this stand.

In an era where digital scams, deepfakes, and unauthorized advertisements are on the rise, Gavaskar’s move highlights the growing need for celebrities to safeguard their identity, reputation, and commercial rights.

Bollywood Celebrities Who Have Secured Their Rights

The Delhi High Court has played a major role in shaping personality rights laws in India. Several prominent figures have already been granted protection, including:

  • Amitabh Bachchan

  • Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

  • Abhishek Bachchan

  • Anil Kapoor

  • Raj Shamani (podcaster)

Gavaskar now joins this list, emphasizing that celebrities retain control over how their name, voice, likeness, and image are commercially used.

A Crucial Step in the Digital Era

With the increasing prevalence of impersonation, unauthorized brand endorsements, and misuse of celebrity photos online, Gavaskar’s action is expected to set a precedent for athletes and public figures across sectors.

His move underscores a larger message: in the age of digital exploitation, protecting personality rights is no longer optional—it’s essential.
