ICC T20 World Cup squad: Aiden Markram named South Africa’s captain for T20 WC 2024

South Africa T20 World Cup squad: South Africa became the second team after New Zealand to announce their T20 World Cup 2024 squad which will take place in the West Indies and USA.  

The Proteas selection committee has believed in Markram’s ability to lead the side in the marquee event and named him as skipper of the South Africa. This will be Markram’s first ever captaincy stint in the ICC event.

Quinton de Kock, who already took the retirement from ODI cricket after last year’s world cup, and had also bid farewell to test cricket, has been included in the 15-member squad, despite not being a member of South Africa’s central contract list.  

While Anrich Nortje, who is facing tough time with the ball in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), also made the cut. Nortje has missed the international cricket action since September 2023 owing to a back injury.

Riyal Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman, who both had performed extremely well in this year’s SA20 league, also found their name in the squad.

RIckleton has ended the tournament as the highest run-getter with 530 runs at an exceptional average of 58.88 and a strike-rate of 173.77.  

Baartman was impressive with the ball as he took 18 wickets in only 8 games at an economy of 6.95 for Sunrisers Eastern Cape.  

David Miller, Heinrich Klaasen Reeza Hendricks, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, and Tabraiz Shamsi are some of the well-known names who also made the cut. While Tristan Stubbs, who is playing well in the ongoing biggest cricket league, is also included in the squad.

South Africa will start their world cup campaign against Sri Lanka on June 3.
