However, the partnership came to an end when Steven Smith was dismissed for a well-crafted 141 runs off 251 deliveries. Even after losing his partner, Khawaja remained resolute at the crease, showcasing his exceptional batting skills.

He reached a significant milestone, completing his maiden double century, scoring an impressive 232 runs from 352 balls, before falling victim to a tricky spinning delivery from Prabath Jayasuriya.

Following the pivotal wicket of Khawaja, debutant Josh Inglis seized the opportunity to make a mark on his Test debut. He played aggressively, scoring a quickfire century in just 90 balls, contributing 102 runs from 94 deliveries. His explosive innings provided a substantial boost to the scoreboard.

Alongside Inglis, Beau Webster managed only 23 runs before being dismissed. Alex Carey demonstrated commendable resilience amidst the flurry of wickets, finishing the innings with a solid 46* runs off 69 balls, while Mitchell Starc chipped in with a quick 19* runs. Challenging Day for Sri Lanka: 3 Wickets Down with 655 to Chase in First Test

In response, Sri Lanka faced the daunting challenge of chasing down a target of 655 runs in their first innings. Their start, however, was disheartening as they lost their first wicket for a mere 7 runs.

This early setback disrupted their batting order significantly, leading to a swift collapse of the top order, which crumbled to just 30 runs.

By the end of the day’s play, Sri Lanka had managed to score 44 runs for the loss of 3 wickets after 15 overs.
