Bangladesh cricket fans can breathe a sigh of relief as legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has clarified that he has not retired from any format. Contrary to earlier announcements suggesting his exit from Tests and T20Is, Shakib has now expressed his desire to make one final appearance across all three formats before bidding farewell to international cricket. So let’s have a look at Shakib Al Hasan retirement update.
Shakib Plans One Last Full Series Before Retirement
Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, Shakib cleared the air around his retirement status. The veteran star revealed that he wishes to return home and play a complete series comprising Tests, ODIs, and T20Is before officially calling time on his illustrious career.
“I am officially not retired from all formats. My plan is to go back to Bangladesh, play one full series of ODI, Test, and T20, and retire,” Shakib stated, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
His statement marks the first public confirmation regarding his revised decision, ending weeks of speculation surrounding his future.
Away From Bangladesh for Over a Year
Shakib has been out of Bangladesh since May 2024 and has not returned following the change in government on August 5. During this period, he faced legal mentions in a case related to an alleged murder, despite not being present in the country at the time. Meanwhile, he continued participating in franchise cricket around the world to stay active and in rhythm.
His last appearance for Bangladesh was the second Test against India in Kanpur in 2024.
Return Depends on Conditions Back Home
While discussing the prospect of returning, Shakib sounded hopeful that situations would stabilize, enabling him to feature in one final home assignment. He made it clear that his farewell series is more about gratitude than performance.
“It doesn’t matter if I play well or not. I want to give something back to the fans by playing one home series,” he added.
