Is captaincy pressure affecting Rohit Sharma’s batting in Test cricket?

Rohit Sharma batting performance as captain

Rohit Sharma’s test captain role has been under scrutiny specially after the 10-wicket loss against Australia in Adelaide during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. So let’s take a look at Rohit Sharma batting performance as captain.

Cricket experts felt that Rohit’s captaincy was defensive during the Pink-ball test, where he also failed to display his class as a batter too. Is it due form or captaincy pressure?

India was at the top of the WTC standings before the three-match home series against New Zealand, but a 3-0 defeat versus the Kiwis harmed India’s chances and casts doubt on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.

His batting had remained a concern, as despite being an opener, Sharma was only able to score 91 runs in six innings versus New Zealand.

India won the first BGT Test under Jasprit Bumrah. KL Rahul opened the innings in place of Rohit after he missed the test due to personal reasons.

Team India followed the same pattern and allowed Rahul to open alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, while Rohit came into bat at number 6 in the second Test. The ‘hitman’ scored just 3 and 6, respectively, in both innings.

Rohit Sharma’s record as Test captain

The veteran Indian player was announced India’s regular skipper in February 2022 and since then he has led India in 22 tests, winning 12 and losing eight, while two ending in draws.

Is captaincy pressure the real reason behind Rohit’s poor run in Tests?

According to the current stats, Rohit has a 14.45 higher average when batting as a team member rather than captain. There is no doubt on Rohit’s ability as he remained a star performer for India over the years, but his recent run indicating that the captaincy pressure is affecting Rohit Sharma’s Test batting performance.
