The franchise took to social media to break the news, sharing a video in which Samson himself introduced Parag as the stand-in skipper during a team meeting.

Riyan Parag as captain in IPL
For Parag, this marks a significant milestone in his IPL journey. Having started his career with the Royals in 2019, he faced multiple setbacks, often struggling with consistency and drawing criticism for underwhelming performances.
However, IPL 2024 was a turning point for the Assam-based batter, as he delivered a breakthrough season, amassing 573 runs in 16 matches at an impressive strike rate of 149.3.
At just 23 years old, Parag is poised to become one of the youngest Indian captains in IPL history, joining the ranks of Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina. His first test as captain will come on March 23, when Rajasthan Royals face Sunrisers Hyderabad in their season opener at Hyderabad.
Sanju Samson’s injury
Samson’s injury, sustained from a Jofra Archer bouncer during India’s fifth T20I match in a five-match series against England, Sanju underwent surgery to treat his hurted finger. In his absence, Dhruv Jurel is expected to handle wicketkeeping duties for the opening matches.
