Reece Topley World Cup Injury News and Update

Reece Topley will miss the rest of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India confirmed by England and Wales Cricket Board.

According to the ECB announcement, Topley suffered a fracture to his left index finger; the board has yet to announce his replacement.

The elite pacer had previously been hurt when playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the 2023 Indian Premier League. He had surgery following the incident and was back in time to play for England in the World Cup.

The Ipswich native, 29, took eight wickets in the ODI World Cup, and was England’s top wicket-taker in the campaign so far.

The left-arm pacer’s career has been marred by injury issues; last year, he was injured after he tripped on a boundary sponge on the eve of the T20 World Cup in Australia, which prevented him from playing for England in the contest his country won in for the second time.

Topley took the wickets of David Miller and Aiden Markram, still it was not his best as he let up 88 runs from his 8.5 overs where the Proteas, led by Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen, went amok and amassed a massive 399-7.

Despite joining the team earlier this week, Archer—one of the stars of England’s 2019 World Cup victory—hasn’t participated in a competitive match since May.

And as per the coach of team England, Matthew Mott, Archer will not be considered as the replacement for Topley. Brandon Carse is the first-choice player as far as replacement is concerned.

England is essentially using Archer’s stay in India to give their medical staff an opportunity to monitor his recovery from a chronic elbow ailment.

Talking about England’s campaign in the World Cup so far, the Jos Buttler led side has only managed to win a single game out of four. They faced a 229-run loss in their last game and are sitting in the second last spot on the points table.
