Team India is all set for the three-match home test series challenge against New Zealand, which begins tomorrow. The selection committee has chosen India’s full-strength squad, with regular skipper Rohit Sharma leading the team as expected, and Jasprit Bumrah has been named as his deputy. Let’s look at Why Bumrah appointed as India’s vice-captain in test cricket?

However, it’s not the first time that Bumrah has been given the responsibility of a vice-captain, but his role hasn’t been discussed much before. 

Ahead of the opening test of the series against New Zealand, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was asked about the Bumrah’s role, Rohit gave an extremely positive response and explain the reason behind Jasprit Bumrah’s appointment as India’s vice-captain in Test cricket.  

“Look, Bumrah has played a lot of cricket. I’ve played a lot of cricket with him. He understands the game pretty well. He’s got a good head on his shoulder. When you talk to him, he understands the game,” Rohit answered reporters during his press meet ahead of first test.  

Jasprit Bumrah to lead India in Australia?  

With Rohit Sharma expected to miss the first test against Australia next month due to personal reasons. Jasprit Bumrah will perform the duty of captain in that match.

Bumrah has a one match captaincy experience in red-ball format, when he captained the Indian side during India’s one-off match against England in 2022.  

India’s leadership change after T20 World Cup victory 

Indian cricket team has seen changes in leadership roles following their T20 World Cup 2024 win.  

The T20 world cup winning captain Rohit Sharma took retirement from T20I cricket after the world cup triumph, and Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as his regular successor in the shortest format of the game.  

Shubman Gill also received the promotion and was elected as vice-captain of India’s ODI side. While Jasprit Bumrah also got the responsibility of India’s regular vice-captain in Test cricket.
