Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn believes that the Royal Challengers Bangalore should look “inside their own borders” for a replacement for Virat Kohli as a captain after the 2021 IPL. According to Steyn, who withdrew from all formats of cricket the previous month feels that Rahul could resurface to the mega auction for another season Steyn said RCB should Bring KL Rahul as Long Term Captain.
Rahul has previously served for the RCB, but he has enjoyed the most of his success since signing the Punjab Kings in 2018. Despite PBKS has failed to disappoint as a club over the last 4 years, the right-hander has was amongst their best run-getters. Rahul has scored over 400 runs at an average of 57.28 in the current edition, including 4 half-centuries.
“If RCB are going to look at a long-term contender as captain, they should be looking within their own borders. The name I’ve got is an ex-Bangalore player. It’s KL Rahul. I just have a feeling he is going to return back to Bangalore in next year’s auction,” Steyn said.
I don’t think AB de Villiers is the right way to go: Steyn
Steyn, who used to play for the Challengers, also believes that RCB should not choose AB de Villiers as the captain since he is towards the end of his career. By the time the IPL 2022 begins, the former South African hitter will be 38 years old.
“I don’t think AB de Villiers is the right way to go. I think he is a phenomenal player. But he is at the end of his career. I think he is a great leader,” Steyn added.
Kohli stated before the opening of the UAE leg of the 2021 IPL that he will stand down as captain of the club at the end of the tournament. His decision came only a few days after he announced his intention to step down as Team India’s T20I captain following the T20 World Cup in the UAE.
RCB are currently in difficulty, having just lost two of their matches in the UAE leg. The Challengers are set to play the Mumbai Indians in Dubai on Sunday, 26th September.
