Kumar Sangakkara Replaces Rahul Dravid as Rajasthan Royals Head Coach for IPL 2026

Kumar Sangakkara Takes Over as RR Head Coach for IPL 2026

Sangakkara Takes Over as Head Coach for IPL 2026

Former Sri Lanka captain and legendary wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara has been appointed the Head Coach of Rajasthan Royals (RR) for the IPL 2026 season. Sangakkara, who served as the Director of Cricket last season, will now take on a dual role—Director of Cricket and Head Coach—replacing Rahul Dravid. So let’s know about Rajasthan Royals new head coach 2026.

The franchise confirmed the move ahead of preparations for IPL 2026, marking Sangakkara’s return to the position he previously held between 2021 and 2024.

Sangakkara Returns to a Familiar Role

Sangakkara, 48, enjoyed successful earlier stints with the Royals, guiding the team:

  • To the IPL 2022 final, and
  • Into the 2024 playoffs

His reappointment comes after a disappointing IPL 2025 campaign under Dravid, where RR finished ninth with only 8 points in 14 matches.

Despite rumours of a rift between Dravid and former captain Sanju Samson during the 2025 season, the franchise had publicly dismissed the claims.

Official Statement: Sangakkara Ready for New Challenge

Reacting to his appointment, Sangakkara said:

“I’m honoured to return as Head Coach and continue working with this talented group. I’m also pleased to have a strong coaching team alongside me. Vikram, Trevor, Shane, and Sid each bring valuable experience, and together we are focused on preparing the players in the best possible way.”

He added that the franchise has a clear roadmap built around clarity, resilience, and purpose.

Vikram Rathour Elevated; Coaching Staff Retained

The Royals have also strengthened their support staff:

  • Vikram Rathour has been promoted to Assistant Coach, taking charge of batting development and strategic planning.
  • Shane Bond continues as Fast Bowling Coach, offering experience and continuity in pace development.
  • Trevor Penney remains Assistant Coach.
  • Sid Lahiri continues as Performance Coach.

This setup ensures a blend of continuity and fresh direction under Sangakkara’s leadership.

Franchise Ownership Backs Sangakkara’s Leadership

Manoj Badale, Lead Owner of Rajasthan Royals, expressed complete confidence in the decision:

“Kumar’s familiarity with the squad, leadership quality, and deep understanding of Royals’ culture provide continuity and stability. His clarity, calmness, and cricketing intelligence will be vital as we enter the next phase.”

Royals Undergo Major Squad Reshuffle Ahead of IPL 2026

Rajasthan Royals have already started a massive overhaul of their squad:

  • Sanju Samson traded to Chennai Super Kings
  • Sam Curran and Ravindra Jadeja acquired in a blockbuster trade

With the mega auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, the franchise aims to plug remaining gaps and rebuild a title-contending team under Sangakkara.
