New Zealand Cricket Plans To Reduce Workforce By 10 To 15 Percent

The economy of many parts of society is affected by the global coronavirus pandemic. The financial dimension of things has also struggled in this situation. Cricket has suffered across the globe, and cricket boards are struggling to handle their finances. In this sense, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has suggested a 10 to 15 percent reduction in their staff.

In that case, the board could cut operational expenses by up to $ 6 million. Because of the ‘major reduction’ in revenues following COVID-19, the necessary measure is taken. NZC CEO David White has already told all his employees about the consultation process accepted by the Board.

In Auckland and Lincoln (nearly Christchurch), White said that people like senior staff might lose their jobs. The reports, however, suggest that this step will not impact the men and women’s squad, including the players and management.

The cut in staff would save NZC approximately $1.5 million by cutting its 10 to 15 percent employees. NZC spent $8.5 million on employee salaries, according to last year’s annual report. “It would be fair to say that this [return] is a significant reduction, hence these significant cuts. Throughout the year, we have the priorities which we’re not compromising, and we invest in them. The cuts are coming from NZC, $6 million, of which $1.5m is staff, “White said.

It is a challenging situation, says NZC Chief Executive

“This is what I think we see most of the companies in New Zealand. It’s a tough situation, and we have to work to make sure that NZ Cricket continues to be strong and viable, “White added.

The COVID-19 situation has been handled quite well in New Zealand. There is no idea, however, when cricket in this country will resume. New Zealand is expected to play a series against Australia. There has been talking of cricket resumption following the coronavirus pandemic in Trans-Tasman’s bubble. But it might still be held behind the closed doors, even if it goes ahead.
