The present T20 World Cup has seen the toss play an important role in a number of games played, particularly in Dubai. Instead, only once in Super 12 games played in Dubai has a squad batting first succeeded, with dew taking a significant impact later. Two semi-finals saw the team batting 2nd win although the teams that lost the toss and put on a good performance with the batting, Unfortunately, they would have to struggle with dew and finished up on the wrong side of the outcome. However, Australia captain Aaron Finch is unconcerned with the coin toss and believes it will have no bearing on the outcome of the final versus New Zealand on Sunday (November 14). Under a competition like the World Cup, a team is able to succeed in any condition.
We saw it in the IPL final, CSK were able to put a big score: Finch
“Absolutely it can be overcome. At some point, to win this tournament you’re going to have to bat first. I was actually hoping to lose the toss against Pakistan because I would have loved to put up a score on the board in that semi-final. It was one of those ones where you’re probably never going to bat first but you don’t mind if you have to. It’s the same going into the final,” Finch said.
Notably, 16 of the past 17 night T20 matches in Dubai have been won by teams who chased, with the only exception being the IPL 2021 final won by Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The MS Dhoni-led team scored a large total and then held on to defeat the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Aaron Finch made the same observation, claiming that winning batting first in Dubai is really not impossible. “We saw it in the IPL final. Chennai were able to put a big score on the board and really squeeze there. It comes down to the day. If you can put a total on the board and make the opposition take risks early in the innings, then that’s what it’s all about,” the Aussie skipper added.
