N Srinivasan’s IPL History with Chennai Super Kings and His Return

N Srinivasan returns as CSK chairman

N Srinivasan’s association with Chennai Super Kings shaped the team’s IPL journey; his recent return as CSK chairman marks a significant leadership shift. So Let’s take a look at N Srinivasan returns as CSK chairman.

N Srinivasan’s Historical Role with Chennai Super Kings

N Srinivasan, a prominent Indian industrialist and long-serving cricket administrator, was pivotal in setting up Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when the IPL launched in 2008. As managing director of India Cements, Srinivasan secured CSK’s franchise rights, influencing critical decisions such as orchestrating the signing of MS Dhoni, the move widely credited for CSK’s eventual IPL dominance. Although he never officially held a direct post in the franchise’s early years, his business acumen and deep involvement made him the strategic force behind CSK’s operations. His tenure was marked by both success and controversy: in 2013, the IPL spot-fixing and betting scandal resulted in the Supreme Court of India ordering Srinivasan to step down as BCCI president to facilitate investigations. Concurrently, regulatory changes around conflict of interest forced the transfer of CSK ownership from India Cements to a separate legal entity—Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited—in 2014. Despite these trials, CSK maintained its stature as a model franchise.

Why Is N Srinivasan Back in CSK Leadership?

After several years away from public administration, N Srinivasan has returned as chairman of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), the current owner and operating company for CSK. This change, made official in 2025, was ratified at the company’s annual meeting, with Srinivasan’s daughter Rupa Gurunath appointed as wholetime director. The move comes at a time when CSK is searching for stability, having finished last in IPL 2025 and facing on-field and off-field transitions. CEO Kasi Viswanathan hailed Srinivasan’s return as a big boon for the franchise, emphasizing his experience and visionary leadership. Srinivasan’s new role is primarily advisory due to his advanced age, but his strategic insight and deep institutional knowledge are expected to help CSK navigate a competitive and evolving IPL environment. His return also signals a renewed emphasis on legacy and continuity as the franchise rebuilds after a challenging season.

N Srinivasan’s comeback as CSK’s chairman reaffirms his enduring influence on the franchise; his leadership could be pivotal for Chennai Super Kings as they seek to reclaim IPL prominence.
