Mohammed Shami Comeback Backed by Sourav Ganguly for India Return
Ganguly Supports Shami’s Comeback to Indian Team
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced strong support for Mohammed Shami’s return to international cricket. The legendary Bengal cricketer stated that there is “no reason” the seasoned pacer cannot continue representing India across all formats, given his fitness and current form. So let’s know about Mohammed Shami comeback.
“Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit, and we’ve seen him perform brilliantly for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy. I really don’t see any reason why he can’t play Test matches, One-day cricket, and T20 cricket for India. His skill is enormous,” Ganguly told The Indian Express.
Shami’s Domestic Dominance in Ranji Trophy 2025
After missing India’s Test and ODI squads since the Champions Trophy 2025, Mohammed Shami has been making headlines with his impressive performances in domestic cricket. Representing Bengal in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season, the veteran pacer has already picked up 15 wickets in just three matches, including a match-winning spell of 5/38 that powered Bengal to a 141-run win.
His workload management and consistent pace show that he has regained both rhythm and fitness following his ankle surgery after the 2023 World Cup.
Selectors Yet to Recall the Veteran Pacer
Despite his strong domestic form, Shami has not been named in India’s squad for the upcoming South Africa Test series starting Friday at Eden Gardens. Ganguly, however, believes that the selectors are keeping a close watch on his progress.
“I’m sure the selectors are in touch with him. In terms of fitness and skill, it’s the same Shami we’ve always known. He deserves another run in the national side,” Ganguly added.
Shami Responds to Selection Controversy
Addressing ongoing speculation about his omission, Shami recently spoke about his mindset and commitment to Bengal cricket.
“Yes, I knew this question would come. I’m always in controversy anyway. My job is to perform well, and wherever I get a chance, I’ll give my best. Bengal is my home, and every match for Bengal is special to me,” said Shami.
A Proven Match-Winner for India
Shami was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup, claiming 24 wickets at an average of 10.70. His exceptional new-ball and death-over bowling remain among the best in world cricket. With Ganguly’s backing and consistent domestic performances, fans are hopeful that the veteran pacer’s international comeback is just around the corner.
