In a shocking development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has removed Mohammad Rizwan as the ODI captain, reportedly over his refusal to endorse betting-related sponsors. The decision came late on Monday (October 20), with the PCB appointing Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new ODI skipper for the upcoming home series against South Africa. So let’s have a look at Mohammad Rizwan sacked as Pakistan ODI captain.
Rizwan’s Sacking Sparks Controversy in Pakistan Cricket
The sacking of Rizwan, who took charge just a year ago, has sparked heated debate among fans and cricket experts. While the PCB has not issued an official explanation for the decision, reports suggest multiple factors influenced the move — from team management conflicts to off-field disagreements over sponsorships.
According to a report by the Times of India, Rizwan had informed PCB officials that he would not endorse or promote betting or surrogate betting companies. This reportedly clashed with the board’s ongoing sponsorship commitments, many of which are tied to betting affiliates through surrogate arrangements.
“Rizwan made it clear he wouldn’t support betting-related sponsorships, which created a conflict with PCB’s commercial obligations,” a PCB insider told the publication.
Coaching Staff and Selection Panel’s Role
Reports also indicate that white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and members of the selection committee played key roles in pushing for the change. Among them were Aaqib Javed, the high-performance director, and former captains Sarfaraz Ahmed and Misbah-ul-Haq, who now serve as advisors to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Sources claim that the final decision came after a meeting in Islamabad, where concerns were raised about Rizwan’s leadership style and off-field influence.
Concerns Over Religion and Team Environment
A separate report from PTI suggested that some PCB members were uneasy about Rizwan’s growing tendency to incorporate religious activities within the team setup. It was reported that he organized sermons at team hotels and encouraged teammates to engage more in religious practices.
While these actions were not officially cited as reasons for his dismissal, insiders hinted that it caused discomfort among some players and officials.
Shaheen Afridi Takes Over Amid Uncertainty
With Rizwan’s removal, Shaheen Shah Afridi has been handed the captaincy for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. This marks the third captaincy change for Pakistan in ODIs within the past 12 months, reflecting instability in the team’s leadership.
Rizwan’s record as captain includes 20 ODIs, with 9 wins and 11 losses, including a disappointing campaign in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
