KL Rahul Captaincy Decision For SA ODIs: Report Reveals Reason
KL Rahul to Lead in Gill’s Absence
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. With regular skipper Shubman Gill recovering from a neck injury, KL Rahul has been named the captain for the series starting November 30. So let’s know about KL Rahul captaincy decision.
Gill sustained the injury during the first Test and also missed the second Test in Guwahati, which ruled him out of the ODI squad.
Why Not Rishabh Pant? BCCI Source Explains
Following the announcement, many fans questioned why star wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant wasn’t handed the captaincy, given his leadership credentials and recent performances.
A BCCI source has clarified that Rahul’s appointment is only temporary and not connected to long-term captaincy plans. Pant, meanwhile, was not considered because he has barely featured in ODIs this year, having played only one 50-over match in the last 12 months.
The source further added that Shubman Gill is expected to return fully fit for India’s next ODI assignment – a three-match home series against New Zealand in January 2026 – and will likely resume the captaincy at that time.
“Rahul’s captaincy is a one-off and should be seen independently. Pant was not considered as he has only played one ODI in the last year. Selectors are hopeful Gill will recover and be back for the New Zealand series,” a BCCI insider told PTI.
Rahul’s Past Leadership Record Inspired Confidence
Another key factor behind the decision was Rahul’s prior experience as ODI captain. Between 2022 and 2023, he led India in 12 matches, winning eight of them. The selectors believed that his leadership familiarity would bring stability to the team during Gill’s absence.
Jadeja Returns as Squad Gets Strengthened
The squad also features the return of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who last played an ODI in March during the Champions Trophy final. Jadeja replaces Axar Patel, who has been rested for the series.
The team otherwise remains largely balanced, combining proven performers with players returning from breaks.
ODI Series Schedule
India and South Africa will lock horns across three ODIs at:
- November 30 – Ranchi
- December 3 – Raipur
- December 6 – Visakhapatnam
