The wait is over, as the IPL Governing Council has finally unveiled the new rules for the 3-year window from IPL 2025 to 2027.

The most exciting announcement among them is the introduction of match fees of INR 7.5 Lakhs for each player to participate in a game. With this rule in place, a player who plays in all league matches can earn an additional sum of INR 1.05 crore.

While the much-awaited retention rule saw an increase in the number of retentions, as a franchise can now retain up to six players, with a maximum of 5 capped, and 2 uncapped.

For instance, if a franchise opts to choose 4 capped players, they can then retain two uncapped via retention or RTM (Right to Match card).

MS Dhoni to play as an uncapped player?

It’s been over four months till the IPL 2024 ended, but the topic of MS Dhoni’s involvement in IPL 2025 remains the talk of the town and will continue to be until Dhoni himself makes an official announcement about his future in the league.

Among all the speculations of his participation, the re-introduction of the uncapped player rule, which allows an Indian player to play as an uncapped player in the Indian Premier League if he has not played any international game in the last five years and not does not have a central contract with BCCI, once again opened the door for rumors of Dhoni’s participation.

The franchise retained MSD for INR 12 crore before IPL 2022, but as Dhoni is not sure about his participation for more three years or he may play at least one more year, the uncapped player rule can benefit his franchise, as by using it, CSK can retain MS Dhoni for a sum of INR 4 crore. Whether the franchise will use this option or not, they will have to take the call before October 31st, as that is the deadline for franchises to finalise and submit the list of retained players.
