India’s Test Cricket since Bangladesh Series: A Tale of lost Rhythm and Momentum

India performance in Test cricket since 2024 Bangladesh series

Team India’s hopes of reaching the WTC final for third time were shattered with a catastrophic 3-1 Border Gavaskar Trophy loss in Australia. So Let’s take a look at India performance in Test cricket since 2024 Bangladesh series.

Despite winning the opening Test of the series by 295 runs, the Indian team failed to capitalize on the momentum and faced defeats in three of the next four games.

India played six games in the first half of 2024 and won five of them. However, the second half proved challenging for the team and their chances of qualifying for the WTC final 2025.

In the ten games India played in the last four months, the team has won just three, losing six and one was ended in a draw.

Things grew worse when the team lost a home series against 3-0, followed by a below par batting efforts in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, which cost India the series.

Shockingly, India’s regular skipper Rohit Sharma, has opted out of the final BGT Test due to his inconsistency with the bat. The decision received mixed reactions from the cricket experts and the fans.

Shubman Gill, who replaced Rohit in the Sydney Test, only hit 33 runs in two innings. While other Indian batters’ performance remained unsatisfactory, having bowled out for 185 in first innings, and on 157 in the second.

Team India was leading the WTC points table before the start of Test series against New Zealand. The series which can literally confirm India’s WTC berth, made matters worse.

After winning their first Test after 36 years in India, Team New Zealand went on to beat the host nation in the second and third Tests, played at Pune and Mumbai, respectively to secure a dominating 3-0 win.

India’s recent underwhelming in Tests, despite playing with nearly full-strength, has raised the questions whether Rohit Sharma, who will turn 38 before the next Test series in June, will continue to lead India in longest format of the game?

Virat Kohli’s form and place in the Team will also be discussed, in spite of being a senior batter and perhaps India’s biggest match winner for India for quite a long time, his form in red-ball cricket has been subpar, and his dismissal always put pressure on the middle-order much early in the game.
