ICC Code of Conduct breach by Harmanpreet Kaur

ICC suspends Harmanpreet Kaur: In a shocking turn of events, Indian cricket fans were left dismayed as their beloved captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, has been suspended for the first two international matches, coinciding with the prestigious Asian Games.

The suspension comes as a result of her fiery outburst during a recent match against Bangladesh, where she lost her temper over a contentious umpiring decision. Harmanpreet’s emotional reaction has not only cost her team a vital player but also raised questions about the quality of umpiring in the game. Let’s delve into the details of this incident and its consequences for the star captain.

The Umpiring Controversy

Harmanpreet Kaur finds herself at the Centre of a crucial umpiring decision during the match versus Bangladesh. When Harmanpreet attempted a sweep shot against Nadia Akter, she was unable to make contact with the ball, which caused it to strike the batter in the pad. The umpire approved the LBW (Leg Before Wicket) appeal, which prompted the Indian skipper to lose his temper.

Her anger didn’t subside, and Harmanpreet continued to argue with the match officials as she left the field. Post-match, she didn’t hold back in expressing her discontent with the umpiring, stating that “I think a lot of learning for us from the game. Even apart from the cricket, the kind of umpiring that was happening we were very surprised. The next time we come to Bangladesh we will make sure we have to deal with this type of umpiring and prepare ourselves accordingly.”

Then she went on to say that “In between we leaked a few runs but we controlled the game very well when we were batting but as I mentioned earlier some pathetic umpiring was done we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires.” (Source: Crickbuzz)

The ICC Code of Conduct Breach

Harmanpreet’s behavior’s on the pitch prompted immediate action from the International Cricket Council (ICC). She was judged responsible for a Level 2 offence, which is defined as “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.” She consequently paid a 50% match fee fine and was docked three demerit points from her disciplinary record.

She was also charged with a Level 1 offence for “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match,” which resulted in a 25% match fee penalties. Akter Ahmed, a Bangladeshi-born international panel match referee for the ICC, brought the accusations against Harmanpreet. There was no need for a formal hearing because the captain admitted to her wrongdoing.

Consequences of the Suspension

With the accumulation of four demerit points, Harmanpreet Kaur’s disciplinary record triggered a two-match suspension. Regrettably, the suspension will coincide with the first two matches of the upcoming Asian Games, set to commence on September 23.

The absence of their dynamic captain will undoubtedly be a significant blow to the Indian cricket team, as they were banking on her leadership and exceptional cricketing skills to secure a strong start in the tournament.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer for the Skipper to return

As fans eagerly await her return to the pitch, this incident serves as a reminder to players and cricket authorities to prioritize sportsmanship and fair play in the game. It also emphasizes the need for continuous improvement in the quality of umpiring to maintain the integrity of cricket as a sport.
