ICC Annual Rankings: Australia dethrone India to become No.1 test team

Australia became the new number one in test cricket by dethroning India at the latest ICC annual rankings 2024.  

The Pat Cummins-led Australia now sitting in top spot with 124 points, 4 more than the second-placed India, and 19 more than the third-ranked England.  

ICC has considered games played after May 2021, and the results between May 21’ to May 2023 series are weighted at 50 percent, while the results in the last 12 months are counted at 100 percent.    

The result of the India vs Australia Border Gavaskar Trophy has not been included in the cycle, which India won 2-1. 

Australia’s dominance in ICC events  

Australia won the World Test Champion in 2023 by claiming a 209-run triumph over India which was played in England.  

4 months later in the same year, Australia once again broke India’s dream of winning an ICC title by defeating the Indian team in the ODI World Cup final at Ahmedabad.  

While Aussies also won the T20 World Cup in 2021.

ICC ODI Team Rankings  

Despite losing the ODI World Cup to Australia, the Indian side managed to maintain their top spot and are six points ahead at 122 than the second-placed team Australia (116).  

South Africa ranks third with 112 points, while Pakistan (106) and New Zealand (101), are in fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

ICC T20I Team Rankings  

India have maintained their dominance in the T20I rankings and remained on top with 264 points. Australia also overcame England and secured the second spot. However, their lead over the second-best team Australia have been reduced from 11 to 7 points. 

South Africa with 250 are in fourth place, while New Zealand with same points as South Africa, are n fifth as they are behind in fraction.   

West Indies jumped from seventh to sixth, while Pakistan slipped by two spots in the rankings.
