Former Football Legend And Cricketer Chuni Goswami Passes Away

The legendary Indian soccer player Chuni Goswami died at the age of 82 on Thursday, April 30. He was the captain of the Indian team, who won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games in Kolkata. Under his leadership, the National Team won a silver medal at the Asia Cup in 1964. He was retired on behalf of India after 50 appearances.

The enigmatic character used to run his club football trade for Mohun Bagan. According to Sportstar research, the player has suffered from prostate, insulin, and neurological issues over the last few months. His family reported Goswami had been admitted to the hospital the day before, after which he breathed his last in a heart attack at 5 pm.

Chuni Goswami- an effective cricketer as well

Apart from football, Goswami also weaved his magic on the cricket field. After hanging his football boots at the age of 27 in 1964 he started his cricket career late and focused on it. In the 1971-72 season, he was named Bengal Ranji Team Captain. Under his captaincy, Bengal made the final of the first-class event against Bombay.

The Bengals, though, have lost to Brabourne Stadium. He and Subrotto Cave plotted West Indies’ historic innings defeat under Sir Garfield Sobers at Indore in 1966. In that game, he was playing for Hanumant Singh’s Central and led East Zone team. In the encounter, Goswami took eight wickets.

Goswami played an important role in both the bat and the ball during his first-class career. He has scored 1,592 runs with one century and seven fifties in 46 matches, at the strike rate of 28.42. He had taken 47 wickets for five wickets at a medium pace. During his college days, he has taken the privilege of captainship in both football and cricket at the University of Calcutta.

In the last 24 hours, India has lost its two precious gems, Irrfan Khan and Rishi Kapoor. The whole country mourns the deaths of these legends.
